Today we had the chance to bring a tiny bit of order to the chaotic situation here on Lesvos. We are working with Starfish Foundation, a local group of volunteers who have taken on the responsibility for refugees who arrive close to the town of Molyvos.
The group was started by the owners of a local restaurant who initially provided sandwiches to refugees arriving in the Molyvos harbour. Now they have volunteers from around the world, they take care of the OXY transit camp, they assist with getting refugees on buses from the beaches and they have two donated houses that act as storage locations for the donated clothing.
We spent the day working at one of the storage houses for clothing donations. Clothing donations arrive from all over the world. It was touching to see that some of the donations are accompanied by cards with heartfelt messages of support and encouragement for the refugees. The donated clothing is given to refugees, many of whom arrive on the beaches soaked to the skin. The arriving refugees are also given warm clothing – jackets, hats, gloves – for the long cold journey ahead of them.
